Prof. Çiler Çelik Özenci

ÇİLER ÇELİK ÖZENCİ (DDS, PhD)

Dr. Ciler Celik-Ozenci graduated from the University of Hacettepe, Turkey, with a Bachelor’s degree in Dentistry in 1997. She has received a PhD in Histology and Embryology from the University of Akdeniz, Antalya, Turkey, in 2003. She has been working as a Full Professor lecturer and a principal investigator of the Reproductive Biology programme in the same department. She is the Chair of the Department since November 2019. She is also working at the Research Advisory Committee of Akdeniz University as a leading scientist in Medicine since 2017.

She has held a fellowship position at Yale University while performing her PhD thesis between 2001 and 2002. During that period, she has worked at Sperm Physiology Laboratory, in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Yale University under the supervisory of Dr. Gabor Huszar. One of her key scientific achievements was to coauthor as a major investigator in a series of research to develop an objective assay where mature human sperm can be selected by hyaluronic acid-binding. In 2002, she came back to the Department of Histology and Embryology at Akdeniz University in Antalya, Turkey, to finish her PhD thesis, which was investigating the question “whether the morphological selection of human sperm for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) reflects its genetic status, thus would better contribute to human fertilization and increase fertilization rates during assisted reproductive techniques”. Historically, her research concerned the molecular mechanisms of spermatogenesis, emphasizing how such mechanisms may affect male fertility. Her achievements while working at Yale helped her to improve her research skills. After going back to Akdeniz University, she has been granted as a primary investigator in various projects supported by her University and The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), one of the most prominent grant foundations in Turkey.

Dr. Ciler Celik-Ozenci’s group has studied how the PARP pathway might be related to male infertility and was involved in some recent reports in the literature expressing the possible role of this pathway in male reproduction. Studies by Celik-Ozenci, which have been performed utilizing PARP-1 knockout models and pharmacological inhibition of PARP-1, revealed some crucial roles of PARP activity in male reproduction, requiring further attention in the literature. PARP inhibition is gaining importance in various types of cancer treatments and oxidative stress-related diseases. Dr. Ciler Celik-Ozenci’s laboratory has studied the regulation of the blood-testis barrier in rodents in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Yan Cheng from the Rockefeller University of New York. Other projects seek to understand the role of FoxO’s during the development of mouse preimplantation embryos, especially under stress conditions. Such research could provide a useful tool for studying the role of stress-related proteins during early embryogenesis and may

provide an effective means of delivering targeted clinical agents. A recent project regarding the possible functions of FoxO’s during implantation is currently ongoing in Celik-Ozenci Lab which aims to determine a potential biomarker of implantation window and endometrial receptivity. Dr. Celik-Ozenci’s group studied the role of mTOR pathway during spermatogonial stem cell proliferation and their entry to meiosis. A collaborative project is ongoing with Dr Kyle Orwig from University of Pittsburgh regarding human spermatogonia's characterization to enable fundamental and applied investigations. Another recent project to evaluate pre-implantation embryo metabolism utilizing a non-invasive technology that can measure cellular energy was initiated in 2017 in collaboration with Dr Daniel Needleman from Harvard University and Dr Denny Sakkas from Boston IVF. Recently, Dr. Celik-Ozenci Group studies the metabolism of pre-implantation mouse embryos under low oxygen levels. Additional recent projects are;

(i) the potential adverse effects of ovarian tissue cryopreservation upon primordial follicle burn-out mechanism and how transplantation of cryopreserved ovary may impact upon fertility preservation; (ii) to improve the three-dimensional culture of Sertoli cells via various growth factor supplementation to support in vitro spermatogenesis; (iii) mechanisms of pathological decidualization concerning premature ageing of the endometrium; (iv) and role of circadian rhythm disruption on pregnancy and its contribution to intrauterine growth retardation.

Dr. Ciler Celik-Ozenci is a member of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the International Society for Fertility Preservation, the Turkish Andrology Society, and the Turkish Society of Histology and Embryology. She is the editorial board member of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics Journal since 2017 and Journal of Fertility Preservation since 2020. Dr. Celik-Ozenci is the recipient of multiple awards for research, including Akdeniz University “Young Scientist Award” for research, UNESCO-Loreal Women in Science Award (Turkey), Turkish Society of Histology & Embryology Best Presentation Award, Turkish Society of Reproductive Medicine Best Poster Award, Prof. Dr Alpay Kelami Male Infertility Award, and Prof. Dr Turkan Erbengi Research Award in Electron Microscopy. She has published in leading scientific journals and edited textbooks on reproductive medicine, male infertility, and fertility preservation. She is on the referee pool of several journals and has lectured on reproductive medicine.
